Several fundamental problems with our Irish political system need to be urgently addressed: Firstly, our system is neither democratic, nor representative, despite the illusion that the average citizen ‘has a vote’. This is partly because the choices before us are abysmal; do we vote for this gang of self-serving rogues - or the other gang of self-serving rogues - either of which seems to believe they have the God-given right to treat us like medieval serfs - there merely to support their lavish and arrogant lifestyles? The Irish political system - described as ‘unique’ in Europe because of its numerous contradictions-in-terms - is badly and sadly broken. Once elected to government for example, the leader of the ruling party has in effect, full autocratic control through the party whip system, which penalises any party member who exercises his democratic right to differ with the leader. What the ‘dear leader’ says, goes! So, even if any individual politician has the genuine urge to ‘do what is best for the people’ - or genuinely intends to fulfil his election promises - ‘the system’ as it stands will not allow it. Furthermore, corrupt politicians who have been exposed as liars, fraudsters, perjurers and bribe-takers (and there are plenty to choose from folks) have nothing to fear it seems, from exposure in the media or the courts. Despite overwhelming evidence against them, they brazenly continue in office, smiling all the way to the bank - which by the way is officially OUR bank now! And to top it all are the disgraceful levels of moral cowardice on display when ‘our elected representatives’ are simply asked to do their jobs and ‘represent’ a wronged citizen.
It has to be asked folks; who are the REAL fools, when we continue to elect politicians with no moral fibre, no sense of integrity, and no real vocation to serve anyone other than themselves? How much longer will we allow these scoundrels to lord it over us - at our expense, and at our children’s expense? How many ‘secret deals’ with corporations will we turn a blind eye to whilst our heritage and our national resources are plundered?
Ambassador Kennedy seemed to understand this when she said, “The trouble with the Irish is that there isn't enough outrage!”
